Abstract

This research consists of a study on the relationship between teacher training in theory and practice in the education of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). In order to achieve the objective: to investigate teachers' knowledge and practices regarding the inclusion of students with autism, a qualitative, theoretical approach was pursued, based on Mantoan (2003), Sassaki (1997), Nóvoa (1992) and Pimenta (1991). It also included field research carried out in a public school in the municipality of Fortaleza (CE). The participants were six nursery school teachers. The results highlight the importance of inclusion, not only in terms of access, but also in terms of exploring the role of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The conclusion is that it is essential not only to guarantee access for students with ASD, but also to promote their protagonism, valuing their individual abilities and encouraging the development of their potential. It is also important to consider the environment in which these students are placed, so that the strategies adopted are effective and favor the full development of each one.
