Approaches to trafficking in women from a Gender Studies perspective and historiography

Abstract

This article aims to critically analyze studies on the trafficking of women, which implies understanding how this phenomenon has been incorporated and addressed in legal and social structures and by migration studies. This approach recognizes that women are disproportionately affected by this crime, being the majority of victims, mainly for the purposes of commercial sexual exploitation. To this end, a historical analysis of national and international legislation, treaties, and agreements on the subject was carried out, such as the International Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in Women of October 11, 1933, which guided the formulation of other legal frameworks aimed at suppressing this type of international crime. The methodology, guided by historiography and grounded in a gender perspective, sought to recognize and make visible the structural inequalities and power relations that affect men, women, and other gender identities differently. The results point to the relevance of a critical reinterpretation and an updated approach to legal instruments, which highlight the social resistance to fully recognizing the seriousness of the trafficking of women and its historical and contemporary implications.
