This work aims to provide a theoretical overview of how language acquisition occurs in the light of generative theory (CHOMSKY, 1995 and following) which defends the existence of an innate and specific mechanism for this purpose. We follow more specifically the maturational hypothesis for language acquisition, which proposes that acquisition occurs in phases that follow each other from the maturation of the speech system. Based on these assumptions, we present studies on the acquisition of Libras in Brazil, showing how the acquisition of Libras occurs following the maturational phases and describing them with regard to characteristics and, whenever possible, comparing them with the development of Portuguese.
