Abstract

Introduction: Nowadays depression is one of the most serious diseases afflicting the world's population. Women are more likely to develop the disease due to their hormonal physiology, neuropharmacological processes and social aspects. It is believed that the most probable theory is related to deficiency of the biogenic amines. Objective: The present study, through a review in the literature, aimed to reinforce the knowledge about the postpartum depression and the use of antidepressants. Methods: The PubMed, Scielo, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus and Wiley Online Library databases with specialized literature were used, from January 1, 1999 until December 31, 2016. Development: Postpartum depression is an illness that affects around 15% of women. Its first symptoms begin between the 4th and 8th week after childbirth, and include irritability, frequent crying, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, lack of energy and motivation, among others. The disease, if untreated, can cause serious consequences in the construction of the first mother-infant relationships, hence the importance of monitoring and drug treatment. Conclusion: Among the several antidepressants, they stood out as safer and more effective, and fewer present in breast milk, paroxetine and sertraline. These antidepressants belong to the class of Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors. The least accepted and showed high serum concentrations in infant blood were fluoxetine and citalopram. This attests the existence of safe antidepressants to treat the mother, affecting minimum the infant, preventing in this manner, suicide, infanticide and neglect, possible consequences of non-adherence to treatment of postpartum depression.
