This study analyzes the potential for Geographical Indication (GI) registration for the sheep and goat production chain in the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley region, Brazil. In this region, small ruminant farming plays a significant economic and social role, contributing to local development, particularly due to the edaphoclimatic conditions of the semi-arid environment and the traditional production systems. Public institutions, such as Embrapa, IF Sertão-PE, and SETEC/MEC, have contributed to strengthening the sector through capacity-building initiatives and technical assistance, including the Supera São Francisco project. Within this context, the study evaluated the productive, territorial, and cultural characteristics of regional small ruminant farming, aiming at its valorization through intellectual property instruments, especially Geographical Indications. The results indicate that the region presents favorable conditions for this type of protection, meeting the legal requirements established by Brazilian Law No. 9,279/96. It is concluded that sheep and goat meat produced in the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley has specific characteristics linked to its origin and is locally recognized for its uniqueness, reinforcing its potential for obtaining a Geographical Indication.
