With the continuous advancement of technology, organizations can use this resource to remain competitive in the market, increasingly improving and innovating their products/services. To optimize production processes by reducing waste, institutions have adopted lean thinking principles such as the use of the Value Stream Mapping (VSM) tool. The objective of this research is to propose improvements in the process of designating the course coordination function of postgraduate programs at a higher education institution through the VSM. Methodologically, detailed information regarding procedural steps was obtained after consulting the institution's electronic information system and from the responses provided in interviews by users of that system. Among the main results, it is worth highlighting the possibility of reducing the total time for process delivery by around 30% by eliminating non-essential steps and activities. In this way, a lean thinking tool is applied, and value is generated in the quality of the service provided in a public institution.
