Bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae) injurious to grapes in the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil

Abstract

Commercial cultivation of grapes (Vitis sp.) is expanding in the semi-arid region of Rio Grande do Norte (RN) state, Brazil. However, one of the key aspects for successful grapevine cultivation is a knowledge of the pests affecting the crop, especially in regions where cultivation is recent and in the initial phase of expansion. Consequently, the study objective was to conduct the first-ever study of damage by bees to grapes in the semi-arid state of Rio Grande do Norte, and to quantify the losses caused by the attack. The study occurred in a vinyard planted with ‘Itália’ and ‘Isabel’ varieties, located in a semiarid region of RN, in the Mossoró municipality. Studies quantifying damage occurred in the dry season (August - September 2014) and rainy season (February - March 2015). The bees Apis mellifera L. (Hymenoptera: Apidae) and Trigona spinipes Fabricius (Hymenoptera: Apidae) were observed to cause damage to bunches of grapes only during the dry period of the year. The bees caused significant losses in the ‘Isabel’ and ‘Italia’ varieties, with 75.94 and 72.11% of bunches having more than 5% of grapes damaged, respectively.

Possui graduação em engenharia agronômica pela Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (2012). Atualmente é Doutorando (Agronomia) na Universidade Federal Rural da Amazônia. Tem experiência na área de Agronomia (Produção Integrada) e Zootecnia (Produção de Ruminantes e Apicultura). Tem interesse de pesquisa concentrado nos seguintes temas: Biologia de Abelhas, Manejo Integrado de Pragas, Controle Biológico, Toxicidade de produtos fitossanitários e Levantamento entomofaunístico.

Ewerton Marinho Costa, Universidade Federal de Campina Grande

Engenheiro Agrônomo e Doutor em Agronomia/Fitotecnia (área de concentração Proteção de Plantas - Entomologia) pela Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA). Atualmente é professor Adjunto da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande (UFCG), lotado na Unidade Acadêmica de Ciências Agrárias (UAGRA) do Centro de Ciências e Tecnologia Agroalimentar (CCTA), Campus Pombal, PB. Tem experiência na área de Agronomia, com ênfase em Entomologia Agrícola, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: Manejo Integrado de Pragas, diversidade de insetos em áreas agrícolas, controle biológico de pragas, controle alternativo de pragas por meio do uso de inseticidas naturais, toxicidade de produtos fitossanitários a inimigos naturais e agentes polinizadores e respostas fisiológicas de plantas ao ataque de insetos.

Elton Lucio Araujo, Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido

Possui graduação (1994) em Agronomia pela Universidade Federal Rural do Semi-Árido (UFERSA), mestrado (1997) e doutorado (2002) em Entomologia pela Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz" (ESALQ/USP). Atualmente é professor Associado da UFERSA. Na Pós-Graduação é Docente dos cursos de Fitotecnia (UFERSA) e Entomologia (UFRPE). Na UFERSA, coordenou o curso de Especialização em Proteção de Plantas, o curso de graduação em Engenharia Florestal e também coordenou o Programa de Iniciação Científica (PIBIC / PICI - 2010/2011). Tem experiência na área de Entomologia Agrícola, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: taxonomia/ecologia de moscas-das-frutas e manejo integrado de pragas de frutíferas tropicais. Também é coordenador do grupo de pesquisa do CNPq - Moscas-das-frutas na região Nordeste do Brasil: diversidade, hospedeiros e parasitoides. Bolsista de Produtividade em Pesquisa do CNPq.
