This technical note presents an etiological diagnostic on the application of intellectual property in the sisal agribusiness within the Sisal Identity Territory in Bahia, Brazil. The cultivation of Agave sisalana iscentral to the region’s social and economic structure; however, only about 3% to 5% of the plant’s biomass is used as fiber, while its by-products remain underutilized. The study conducted a technological prospection using the Orbit patent database, identifying 86 Brazilian patentsinvolving sisalasan object of innovation. Thedata revealBrazilasthe world’s leading fiber producer, yet show a technological appropriation gap, with patent ownership concentrated in countries such as China, United States, and Germany. Most Brazilian innovations are located outside the producing regions, indicating a mismatch between production and technological development. The mapped technologies encompass fields such as agrobiotechnology, genetic engineering, polymer composites, and bio-inputs. The findings highlight the need for public policies focused on innovation, intellectual property protection, and the enhancement of the regional bioeconomy. Sisal emerges as a strategic input for sustainable development, and aligning production, research, and technological appropriation is essential to strengthen the competitiveness and autonomy of the value chain in Brazil’s semi-arid region.
