This technical note presents an analysis of the current landscape of dairy cooperatives in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, highlighting their importance to the local economy, organizational structure, technological challenges, and innovation opportunities. The objective of this work is to identify potential weaknesses and technological opportunities within the sector, from the perspective of intellectual property. A literature review and secondary data from official institutions, as well as consultations with the INPI using the cooperatives' CNPJs, formed the basis of the analysis of this study. The results indicated that, despite their economic relevance, many cooperatives still face bottlenecks related to management qualification, access to technology, and integration with research centers. The note proposes strategies such as open innovation, encouragement of intellectual property protection, and partnerships with universities as pathways to sustainability and competitiveness for cooperatives in Rio Grande do Sul.
