This study aims to conduct an etiological diagnosis of the first confirmed case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) in a commercial poultry farm in Brazil, reported in the municipality of Montenegro, Rio Grande do Sul, in May 2025. The investigation encompasses the identification and characterization of the viral agent, transmission mechanisms, observed clinical manifestations, and the resulting economic impacts on the regional poultry production chain. Additionally, the study explores the potential of intellectual property instruments as strategic tools for the development and implementation of technologies focused on biosecurity, traceability, and sanitary control. The case of Montenegro, whose annual poultry output exceeds 1.9 million head of poultry and generates over R$64 million in revenue, with 70% destined for export, underscores the need for integrated approaches involving science, innovation, and public policy.
