This Technical Note presents an analysis of the profile of trademark holders using the term "mel" (honey) registered with the Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO), with a focus on the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The research was based on data extracted from the Webseek/INPI system, considering only active and registered trademarks under the Nice Classification Class 30 that specifically list "honey" in their description. Trademark holders were categorized according to their legal nature: (a) Individual Microentrepreneur (MEI); (b) Natural Person (individual); (c) Small or medium-sized enterprises (including EIRELI, limited liability companies – LTDA, or sole proprietors); (d) Cooperatives or Associations; and (e) Large companies (such as corporations – S/A, exporters, and holding companies). The study aims to understand the strategic role of intellectual property in the valorization of honey products from Rio Grande do Sul and the potential for market differentiation through trademarks.
